Commemorating Canada's 150th Anniversary in Scarborough

Rose Van Sluytman

“Miss Rose” lives up to her name – a mix of sweet, colourful, and strong. Considered the “heart” of Highcastle Public School, Rose Van Sluytman is a dedicated children’s supervisor who gains the love and respect of the students she takes care of, from kindergarteners to pre-teens.

“Kids are the greatest joy in my heart. I’m so content with what I do.”

She admits she is strict – “but in a nice way. Only healthy food allowed; be respectful; everyone must stick together while out walking on the road – but it works.” Excursions to the nearby water park, movie theatre, and nature trails keep life interesting. A proud and enthusiastic resident of Scarborough’s Seven Oaks neighbourhood after immigrating from Guyana at age 21, Rose has raised three loyal (now grown) children in the area. “I’ve been in this building since 1984, and feel very safe and happy. People are so caring here.” More hidden treasures of east Scarborough, revealed.
