Delicious food, traditional celebrations and a rich history are at the foundation of the Canadian Tamil Congress’s (CTC) annual Tamil Fest. And an even more special person is behind this successful event – CTC’s executive director Danton Thurairajah.
“The festival is more than just a celebration for the Tamil community, the intention is to attract other communities to come and learn more about us. It’s about the success of Tamil immigrants who fled a country at war.”
Canada is home to the largest Tamil population outside of Indian Subcontinent, and a large part of that population calls Scarborough home.
“Many of the community members are recent immigrants, but we are now Canadians. We want to give back to institutions that helped us when we needed it most. I believe it’s our responsibility.”
Tamil Fest may be the largest event the CTC puts on but it’s not the only event. Under the leadership of Danton, the congress has raised $500,000 over eight years through a walk-a-thon for local community organizations, tree planting events and blood drives.
“We want to integrate into the community, while also keeping our identity, that’s what all our events aim to do.”
