”For the love of children, don’t drink while pregnant.” A life-saving message from husband-and-wife team Brian Philcox and Bonnie Buxton, Founding Directors of FASworld.com – an organization created in 1999, dedicated to stopping the devastating mental and developmental effects caused by Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. As adoptive parents of daughters Colette and Cleo, Brian and Bonnie became personally compelled to find solutions for these disruptive, preventable diseases due to their children’s struggles. Educating parents-to-be, lawmakers, health organizations, media, and community groups, and providing a support system locally and internationally is now the life mission of Brian, a retired advertising and public relations specialist, and Bonnie, a journalist and the author of Damaged Angels: A Mother Discovers the Terrible Cost of Alcohol in Pregnancy. The Governor-General of Canada awarded the duo in 2015 with the Meritorious Service Medal for their advocacy. Living in Scarborough Village, the couple say;
“The spirit and camaraderie of our fellow Scarborough citizens has been an inspiration.”
When needing a break, they love to enjoy our ravines and parks, and take visitors to the Phoenix Restaurant and The Olde Stone Cottage Pub. We thank this special couple for their work to end a heartbreaking yet preventable pandemic.
